Community arts projects

  • The Our Ellenbrook, My Place community play, presented in March 2009, was a tremendous success.
  • We run an annual short story competition: "Ellenbrook, short and sweet" is the anthology of the winners of the 2009 competition and copies are available from 34 Main Street for $10.
  • The Fire Festival is another annual event; the 2009 event takes place at the Grapevine on Friday September 18, 6-9pm and entrance is free. As well as spectacular fire sculptures created by artists-in-residence Michael Arnold, Peter Dailey and students from Midland Campus of Swan TAFE, the event features children’s entertainment, the all-girl singing band The Doubly-Ugly Sisters and a very, very hot pop band, Wing-It.
  • Cinderella (‘It’s a panto Jim, but not as we know it’) will land, along with giant alien mice, at the Performing Arts Centre just after Christmas. This wonderful family show is a community production and like many other Ellenbrook Arts events, is sponsored by City of Swan.

Artist-in-residence programme
From September 14th to 18th 2009, artists and lecturers Michael Arnold and Peter Dailey are working with a group of art students from Midland Campus of Swan TAFE’s Advanced Diploma of Applied Environmental Arts to create huge burnable sculptures for the 2009 Fire Festival.  The artists in residence will also be working with school groups from Ellenbrook to create lanterns for the Fire Festival.

Also in September and October, Indonesian painter and sculptor Ismiadi will use the Grapevine studio space to create works for an exhibition to be held at Ellenbrook Gallery in 2010.  Ismiadi will be working with the art students on Fire Festival sculptures and with school and other community groups.
